What are Claws?

Claws are the AI agents in WorkClaw. Learn about system and custom Claws, configuration options, access control, roles, and how Claws operate within a team.

What is a Claw?

A Claw is an AI agent in WorkClaw -- your digital teammate. Each Claw has its own identity, workspace, skills, and connections. It can research information, draft communications, manage schedules, and carry out tasks autonomously while keeping you informed and in control.

What are the types of Claws?

WorkClaw has two kinds of Claws:

System Claw -- Every team gets exactly one System Claw, created automatically when the team is set up. It is shared across all team members, always available, and cannot be deleted. The System Claw is the default agent your team interacts with.

Custom Claw -- Team members can create additional Claws for specialized purposes. A custom Claw might be dedicated to a specific role (e.g., "Sales Research Assistant"), a particular workflow, or an individual team member's needs. Custom Claws can be deleted by their owner or a team admin.

How do I configure a Claw?

Each Claw has several configuration surfaces, all accessible from the Claw's settings page:

SettingWhat it controls
Name and domainHow the Claw identifies itself and the context it operates in.
Operating instructionsHigh-level rules and priorities, stored in AGENTS.md.
PersonalityCommunication tone and style, stored in SOUL.md.
MemoryLong-term knowledge the Claw retains across sessions, stored in MEMORY.md.
User contextInformation about the user the Claw works with, stored in USER.md.
SkillsWhich skills are installed on this Claw.
ConnectionsWhich connections this Claw can use.

See Agent Configuration for detailed guidance on each setting.

How does access control work?

Claws support two access types:

  • Team -- every member of the team can see and interact with the Claw. This is the default for System Claws.
  • Specific people -- only users who have been explicitly added can access the Claw. Useful for personal assistants or sensitive workflows.

What are the Claw-level roles?

Each user has a role on each Claw they can access:

RolePermissions
AdminFull control -- change settings, install/remove skills, manage connections, adjust access, delete the Claw.
MemberCan chat with the Claw and view its activity, but cannot modify configuration.

Team Owners and Admins are automatically granted the Admin role on every Claw in the team, regardless of explicit assignment. The user who created a custom Claw is also its Admin by default.

What is chat reachability?

Claws on the same team can message each other through ClawChat. The chat reachability setting controls who can initiate these conversations:

  • Any -- every Claw on the team can start a conversation (default).
  • Specific -- only designated Claws can initiate threads.
  • None -- no other Claws can open new conversations with this agent.

Once a conversation exists, both sides can continue messaging regardless of reachability changes.
